Rare materials are the bottleneck of progress in The Forge. Without them, you can't upgrade your gear past a certain point, and you end up stuck while the game keeps scaling in difficulty. This guide shows you where to look for them and how to optimize your farming time so you don't waste hours in the wrong zones.
Material Types in The Forge
The game classifies materials by rarity: common, uncommon, rare, and epic or legendary. Common materials are easy to get from any enemy in any zone on the map. Rare and above only show up in advanced zones, from elite enemies, or in special chests that aren't available in the early areas.
Understanding this classification is the first step to farming efficiently. A lot of players waste time in mid-tier zones waiting for rare materials to appear, when those zones simply don't have them in their drop table. Before farming any zone, check your in-game log or the community for what materials can actually drop there.
Best Zones for Farming Rare Materials
The mid and late-game zones on the map are where you'll find the highest concentration of rare materials. Zone bosses have significantly higher drop rates than regular enemies, and they also have a chance at dropping epic materials that regular enemies don't have in their drop table at all.
Setting up a farming route that passes through several boss spawn points is the most efficient strategy. Instead of camping one spot waiting for a boss to respawn, design a circular route that covers three or four spawn points. By the time you reach the last one, the first should already be available again.
Volcanic rock zones and deep caverns are especially productive for rare mineral-type materials. Swamps and dense jungle zones have better odds for rare organic materials. Learn which type of material you need at your current stage of progression and prioritize the corresponding zone.
Elite Enemies and Why They Matter
Elite enemies are buffed versions of regular enemies that spawn in specific locations with known respawn timers. They have more health, hit harder, and look visually distinct from common enemies, usually with a different visual effect or an indicator above their head.
Memorizing their locations and clearing them systematically is the most consistent way to stack up rare materials without relying on luck. Every elite has a fixed location and a respawn timer. With a bit of effort, you can memorize the three or four most profitable elites at your current level and build your farming session around them.
Some elites only appear under specific conditions, like certain in-game hours or after completing certain events. Keeping an eye on these conditions can give you access to elites most players aren't actively farming.
Boost Your Drop Rate
Some runes and accessories increase your rate of getting rare materials. If your main goal is farming, it's worth temporarily adjusting your build to maximize drops, even if it slightly reduces your combat damage. A farming build doesn't have to be the most powerful in terms of damage, it has to be the most efficient in terms of materials per hour.
Look for runes with a Fortune or Lucky Loot effect in their description. These effects directly affect the odds of enemies dropping higher-rarity materials. Combining two or three of these runes can significantly boost your drop rate without needing to change your main weapon or armor.
Some consumables also temporarily boost drop rate. Using one right before taking on a zone boss or a group of elites can be the difference between walking away with common materials or something rare.
Special Chests and How to Find Them
Special chests are a guaranteed source of rare materials that a lot of players ignore because they're hidden or require solving a small puzzle to open. These chests don't have unlimited respawns; some reset once per in-game day, and others are unique per session.
The Forge community has maps and guides with the locations of the most productive special chests. Investing time in learning these locations can give you a consistent source of rare materials that complements your elite farming.

When to Use Rare Materials
Don't use them until you're sure which upgrade you're going to spend them on. Upgrading the wrong weapon with rare materials is one of the costliest mistakes in the game. Plan your upgrade path before investing resources.
Before spending any rare material, ask yourself: Is this the weapon or gear I'm going to use long term? Does this upgrade meaningfully change my ability to survive or deal damage? Is there a higher-priority upgrade that would benefit my progression more right now?
If you can't answer these questions with confidence, hold onto the material until you can. Rare materials sitting in your inventory are still useful; materials spent on the wrong upgrade are a permanent mistake.
Managing Your Material Inventory
Keeping your inventory organized helps you know at all times how many rare materials you have and how many you're still missing for the upgrade you're after. Keep a mental count, or a note somewhere, of the key materials you need and how many you've stacked up.
When you're getting close to having enough for a major upgrade, you can ramp up farming in the right zones to close that gap quickly. Having a concrete goal makes farming more efficient because you know exactly what you're looking for and where to go find it.
